CBD oil is useful for pets in the same way it is useful for humans because of its effect on the endocannabinoid system that is found in all vertebrate mammals. CBD for pets is becoming popular for its therapeutic and medical effects like reducing pain, inflammations, anxiety, phobia, etc. So, manufacturers are releasing cannabidiol-infused products and CBD oil is the most popular one due to the ease with which it can be used. Having said that, there is growing doubt about the potential side effects of using CBD oil for dogs and the purpose of this article is to address this topic.

Shared below are some of the major side effects of giving CBD oil to your dog.

Many pet owners give CBD for dogs to manage anxiety and fear that can cause behavioral issues like excessive barking, whining, aggression, trembling or spontaneous urinating. There are many reasons for this and one of the most common ones is separation from their owners. So, giving CBD oil helps them to relax and for some dogs, it causes drowsiness due to excessive calming effect. Normally your pet should not sleep for more than 10 hours a day. Besides, you must consult with the veterinarian before giving it and must maintain a journal noting down your pet’s sleeping pattern to notice abnormality.

Excessive lethargy or sleeping can cause weight gain and can be harmful especially for older dogs with muscular or joint issues. Also, sometimes they are less active between naps and this can be due to side effects from CBD oil.

Dry Mouth

CBD for dogs imparts its therapeutic and medical effects by enhancing the endocannabinoid system  (ECS) by influencing the CB1 and CB2 receptors of this system. These receptors are present everywhere in the body and giving CBD oil to dogs might cause dry mouth. This is because the cannabidiol reduced the secretion of the salivary glands. So, dogs try to overcome it by increasing water consumption and if you notice this then you must either stop using CBD oil or reduce its dosage.

CBD for pets can cause diarrhea in some dogs due to its influence on bowel movement which is a homeostatic function regulated by the ECS. Also, this can cause other issues like weight loss and tiredness due to loss of electrolytes. So to determine this, put your pet on a regular diet and see if the bowel movement is troubled or not. If yes, then you should stop using CBD oil for your dog.

On a final note, CBD for dogs is not effective or causes side effects in some canines and this is because of the difference in their physiology.
